Telstra has announced a major shift in its media strategy that will see the telecommunications giant stop streaming live Australian Football League (AFL) and National Rugby League (NRL) matches and instead offer its customers discounted access to Kayo Sports.
The Australian company has agreed a long-term partnership with Foxtel’s sports subscription streaming service, which will effectively replace Telstra Live Pass in both the AFL Live App and NRL Official App, providing fans with live, ad-free coverage of every game from both leagues.
Both apps will continue to be powered by Telstra, which will remain in its role as a major sponsor of the AFL and NRL.
As part of the agreement, Live Pass subscribers will be offered AUS$20 (US$15.26) off Kayo’s basic monthly package, meaning they can access the service for AUS$5 (US$3.82) a month for a year. All other Telstra customers will be offered a AUS$10 (US$7.63) discount.
The offer will provide Telstra customers with access to every game of every round of the AFL and NRL regular seasons, as well as coverage of more than 50 local and international sports across all platforms and devices.

AFL gets AUS$946m boost after extending Foxtel and Telstra broadcast deal to 2024
“We have a great long-term relationship with Telstra and as our company’s strategies evolve, we are finding new ways to work together,” said Patrik Delany, chief executive of Foxtel, which is 35 per cent owned by Telstra. “We have created a great product in Kayo, streaming 50 sports live including the AFL and NRL action, it’s exciting for Kayo to be endorsed for Live Pass customers by Telstra.”
Telstra said its strategy shift is a result of ‘the ongoing evolution of the sports streaming industry’, as well as an Australian broadcast rights landscape that ‘has changed dramatically’ since Live Pass was launched on mobile devices in 2014.

While Live Pass has provided a great experience for our customers over time, Kayo has quickly become the premium sports streaming service in Australia, and we’re excited to provide this exclusive offer to our customers, giving them the chance to watch a wider range of sports on their choice of screen.”
The news comes shortly after Kayo, which has 681,000 subscribers, announced the launch of Kayo Freebies, a new free tier that will stream select sporting events starting with Supercars’ Mt Panorama 500 race in February.
It also came just days after commercial broadcaster Channel Nine revealed that Stan Sport, its own sports streaming offering, will be available for AUS$10 a month.
